Field guide
How to become an atmospheric scientist
An atmospheric scientist studies weather and climate. Forecasting roles generally start with a bachelor's degree in meteorology or atmospheric science, while climate research usually takes a PhD. Employers include government weather services, private forecasters, energy firms and universities.
- Median pay (US)
- $99,070
- Middle 50%
- $73,350 to $129,960
- Employed (US)
- 10,000
- Usual entry level
- Bachelor's degree
BLS calls this group "atmospheric and space scientists".
What the work looks like
Forecasting is shift work built around models and rapid judgment. Research and climate roles are more like computational science, with heavy programming.
The official O*NET job description lists tasks such as:
- Develop or use mathematical or computer models for weather forecasting.
- Interpret data, reports, maps, photographs, or charts to predict long- or short-range weather conditions, using computer models and knowledge of climate theory, physics, and mathematics.
- Conduct meteorological research into the processes or determinants of atmospheric phenomena, weather, or climate.
The route in
- Major in meteorology or atmospheric science, with plenty of math and physics.
- Learn Python and how to work with model output.
- Check federal course requirements if you want to work for a government weather service.
- Do a master's or PhD for research and climate roles.
Pay in the US
The May 2025 national figures for atmospheric and space scientists run from $53,060 at the 10th percentile to $161,890 at the 90th, with a median of $99,070 and a mean of $106,110. BLS projects employment growth of 3% over 2025-35 (as fast as average), with about 800 openings a year.
If you do a PhD in this area
In 2025 the median research doctorate recipient in geosciences, atmospheric, and ocean sciences took 7.8 years from bachelor's degree, 6.4 years from starting graduate school and 5.7 years from starting the doctoral program.
In 2025, of 1,192 research doctorate recipients in geosciences, atmospheric, and ocean sciences, 775 reported a definite postgraduation commitment and 433 of those were postdoctoral study positions in the United States. That is 55.9% of those with a commitment.
In the UK
In the UK, the Met Office is the main employer, and it usually hires graduates in physics, math or meteorology.
ONS ASHE 2026 (provisional) gives median annual gross pay of £52,044 for full-time employees in SOC 2020 group 2114, physical scientists. This is a provisional figure from a small sample, so treat it as a rough guide.
