Field guide
How to become a biochemist
A biochemist works out the chemistry of living things: how proteins fold, how enzymes behave and how a drug binds to its target. Independent research roles usually call for a PhD, and most jobs sit in pharmaceutical and biotech companies or research institutes.
- Median pay (US)
- $127,410
- Middle 50%
- $95,000 to $163,460
- Employed (US)
- 33,830
- Usual entry level
- Doctoral or professional degree
What the work looks like
Days are built around experiments that often fail and data that needs careful reading. In a company the target is usually a product decision. In a university it is usually a paper and the next grant.
The official O*NET job description lists tasks such as:
- Share research findings by writing scientific articles or by making presentations at scientific conferences.
- Teach or advise undergraduate or graduate students or supervise their research.
- Study physical principles of living cells or organisms and their electrical or mechanical energy, applying methods and knowledge of mathematics, physics, chemistry, or biology.
The route in
- Major in biochemistry, chemistry or molecular biology.
- Learn the core techniques as early as you can, such as protein purification, mass spectrometry and basic data analysis.
- Spend at least one summer in a working research lab.
- Apply for a funded PhD if you want to lead projects. A bachelor's or master's can lead to research associate roles in industry.
Pay in the US
The May 2025 national figures for biochemists and biophysicists run from $74,290 at the 10th percentile to $201,110 at the 90th, with a median of $127,410 and a mean of $129,840. BLS projects employment growth of 12% over 2025-35 (much faster than average), with about 2,900 openings a year.
If you do a PhD in this area
In 2025 the median research doctorate recipient in biological and biomedical sciences took 8.0 years from bachelor's degree, 6.3 years from starting graduate school and 5.7 years from starting the doctoral program.
In 2025, of 9,950 research doctorate recipients in biological and biomedical sciences, 5,460 reported a definite postgraduation commitment and 3,588 of those were postdoctoral study positions in the United States. That is 65.7% of those with a commitment.
In the UK
UK biochemists commonly work for pharmaceutical firms around Cambridge, Oxford and London, or at research institutes. A funded PhD is the usual step to a scientist title.
ONS ASHE 2026 (provisional) gives median annual gross pay of £49,121 for full-time employees in SOC 2020 group 2113, biochemists and biomedical scientists. This is a provisional figure from a small sample, so treat it as a rough guide.
